The sound
UK garage emerged in London in the early-to-mid 1990s as a faster, more percussive offshoot of US garage house, blending 2-step rhythms, shuffled drums, and soulful vocals. It peaked commercially between 1997 and 2001, then evolved into grime and bassline, but remains a foundational influence on UK dance music.
